a Vape Coil
Three minutes of priming protects a £3 coil for its full 1 to 3 week lifespan. Skip it and the burnt taste will ruin the coil before you finish your first pod. Here is the exact UK step-by-step from cotton drip to first puff.
A new vape coil has dry cotton wick inside it. Fire the device without priming and the heat scorches the dry cotton instead of vaporising e-liquid. The burnt taste that follows often permanently ruins the coil. Priming stops this. Five steps. Drip 2 to 3 drops of e-liquid directly onto the visible cotton wicking holes of a new coil. Install the coil into the tank or pod. Fill the tank or pod completely. Wait 3 to 5 minutes upright so the cotton fully saturates. Start gently with 3 to 4 dry pulls (no firing), then vape at low power for the first few draws. Pod-kit coils follow a simpler version of the same steps but the 3 minute sit is non-negotiable in all cases.

Five steps to prime a new UK vape coil correctly
Priming is the single most important habit in vaping. Skipping it is the number one cause of burnt taste on a new coil. The five steps below cover both refillable tank coils plus pod-kit replacements. The sit-time step is non-negotiable in every case.
Step 1: manual prime the wicking holes
For replaceable tank coils with visible cotton:
- Unbox the new coil. Inspect the side wicking holes. These are small slots showing cotton peeking through the metal casing.
- Drip 2 to 3 drops of e-liquid directly onto each visible cotton hole. Use your standard e-liquid.
- Optional: drip 1 drop into the centre tube of the coil from the top. This pre-wets the heating element itself.
- Do not overdo it. Saturated cotton is good. Flooded cotton gurgles.
For pod-kit replaceable coils where the cotton is not directly visible, skip this step plus go straight to step 2.
Step 2: install the coil
Place the coil into its housing:
- Tank coils. Screw into the base plate of the tank. Finger tight only. Do not over-tighten.
- Pod coils. Push-fit or screw into the pod base. Follow the manufacturer’s indicator.
- Check the O-rings. Make sure rubber seals are seated properly to prevent leaks.
Step 3: fill the tank or pod
Add e-liquid via the fill port:
- Open the top-fill or side-fill port on a tank. Rotate or unscrew as designed.
- Drip e-liquid into the chamber. Avoid the centre airflow tube where you can.
- Fill to the max line not past it. Over-filling creates pressure plus leaks.
- Close the port firmly. Wipe any excess with a cloth.
Step 4: sit upright for 3 to 5 minutes
The critical step. The cotton must saturate before you fire the device:
- Stand the device upright. This lets gravity pull liquid down through the wicking holes into the cotton.
- 3 minutes minimum for thin nic salts. Runnier liquid wicks faster.
- 5 minutes for thicker high-VG shortfills. Glycerin is slower to absorb.
- Add another 1 to 2 minutes in cold weather. Low temperatures slow wicking.
- Do not shake the device. Let gravity do the work.
Step 5: first puffs at low power
The final phase. Start gentle plus build up:
- Take 3 to 4 dry puffs without firing the device. This draws extra liquid through the wick via airflow suction.
- Fire at low wattage for the first draw. Drop 10 to 15 watts below your usual setting if your device allows.
- Short soft puffs for the first 5 to 10 draws. Let the coil settle into use without stress.
- Ramp up to normal power over the next minute.
- For fixed-power pod kits, just use gentle draws for the first few minutes. You have no wattage control to back off.

Vaping before the sit time
Firing an unsaturated coil burns the cotton instantly. A £3 coil dies in 2 seconds. Always wait the full 3 to 5 minutes.
Over-dripping during prime
Too much e-liquid on the cotton produces gurgling plus flooded draws. 2 to 3 drops per wick hole is plenty.
Max wattage first puff
Starting at full power blasts partially saturated cotton. Drop 10 to 15 watts below usual for the first few draws.
Shaking to speed wicking
Shaking does not help. It pushes liquid past the wicking holes into the airflow. Let gravity work for you.
