Is 20mg of
Nicotine a Lot

Depends on the user. 20mg/ml is the UK legal maximum strength. For a heavy ex-smoker it is the right match. For a light smoker or non-smoker it is too much. The question to ask is not whether 20mg is a lot in absolute terms. It is whether 20mg matches your smoking history.

The short answer

Depends on the user. 20mg/ml is the UK legal maximum nicotine strength for any e-liquid. For a heavy ex-smoker who had 20+ cigarettes a day it is the correct starting strength. For a moderate smoker 10mg/ml usually works better. For a light smoker 6mg/ml or 3mg/ml is a better fit. Non-smokers should not vape nicotine at any strength. Twenty milligrams per millilitre in nic salt form delivers a cigarette-like nicotine hit without the combustion products. Around 20 to 40 gentle draws on a 20mg/ml pod deliver roughly the same nicotine as one cigarette. The UK 2ml tank cap plus 10ml bottle cap plus self-titration mean overdose from normal vaping is not realistic. Accidental ingestion by children is the real risk, which is why every UK bottle uses a child-resistant cap. Strength should match smoking history not be chosen for its maximum.

The detailed answer

Whether 20mg/ml is a lot depends on five factors for UK adult vapers

The question “is 20mg a lot” sounds simple but the honest answer has five parts. The strength is defined. The user is not. Five factors shape whether 20mg/ml is the right strength or not for any given UK adult vaper.

Factor 1: smoking history

Matching strength to smoking history is the single most important factor:

  • 20+ cigarettes a day. 20mg/ml nic salt is the typical starting point. Matches heavy ex-smoker nicotine needs.
  • 10 to 20 cigarettes a day. 10mg/ml nic salt usually suits better.
  • 5 to 10 cigarettes a day. 6mg/ml nic salt or 3mg/ml shortfill with a low-power device.
  • Occasional or social smoker. 3mg/ml or 0mg flavours only.
  • Never smoked. 0mg flavours only. Adult vaping is not intended for never-smokers.

Factor 2: device type

The same strength behaves differently across devices:

  • MTL pod kit at 10-20W. 20mg/ml nic salt is the intended pairing. Appropriate strength.
  • MTL tank at 20-30W. 20mg/ml is feasible but 10mg/ml usually more comfortable.
  • Sub-ohm DTL kit at 40W+. 20mg/ml would deliver dangerous volumes of nicotine per draw. Never use 20mg/ml in a sub-ohm device.
  • Convertible tank. Check the wattage setting. Match strength to the mode.

Factor 3: form of nicotine

Freebase nicotine plus nic salt feel very different at 20mg/ml:

  • 20mg/ml nic salt. Smooth plus manageable on an MTL pod kit. Feasible for most ex-smokers.
  • 20mg/ml freebase. Harsh throat hit. Almost unvapable for most UK adult users. Rarely sold in the UK now.
  • Pod kit e-liquid at 20mg/ml. Practically always a nic salt.
  • Sub-ohm shortfills. Almost always 3mg/ml freebase post-nic-shot addition. Never 20mg/ml.

Factor 4: individual tolerance

Not every adult ex-smoker responds to nicotine identically:

  • High-tolerance smokers. Heavy 20+ a day users often need full 20mg/ml at first.
  • Lower-tolerance former smokers. Some 20-a-day smokers settle better at 10mg/ml because of faster vape absorption.
  • Watch for nausea, lightheadedness or headaches. These suggest too much nicotine. Step down a strength.
  • Watch for cravings or restlessness. These suggest not enough. Step up a strength or adjust technique.

Factor 5: time since switching

Strength needs evolve over time:

  • First 1 to 3 months. Strength should match smoking history closely. Prevents relapse.
  • 3 to 6 months. Consider stepping down if comfortable. 20mg/ml to 10mg/ml is a common first step.
  • 6 to 12 months. Further step down to 6mg/ml is often achievable.
  • 12+ months. 3mg/ml shortfill with sub-ohm kit or 0mg flavour only, is the long-term target for many.
  • Some adults stay at 20mg/ml indefinitely. That is a legitimate choice plus still far lower harm than smoking.
UK authority source check. The 20mg/ml ceiling is set in Regulation 36 of the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016. The cigarette equivalence range cited here reflects Public Health England’s 2018 e-cigarette evidence review alongside independent UK research. Strength laddering guidance draws from NHS Stop Smoking Service practice plus the UK Vaping Industry Association buyer guidance. Dispergo Vaping only stocks MHRA notified e-liquid within the UK strength framework.
Right-for checks

Four scenarios where 20mg/ml
is or is not the right choice

Right for heavy ex-smokers

20+ a day UK smokers typically need 20mg/ml to satisfy cravings when first switching. The full UK legal maximum is designed for this group.

Too much for light smokers

Smokers of fewer than 10 a day usually feel nauseous or lightheaded on 20mg/ml. 6mg/ml or 3mg/ml suits better.

Not for sub-ohm devices

20mg/ml plus high power plus DTL technique delivers dangerous nicotine volumes per draw. Always 3mg/ml or lower in sub-ohm kits.

Not for non-smokers or pregnancy

Non-smokers should not vape any strength. Pregnant women should not vape nicotine-containing products. Both are UK NHS guidance.

The strength ladder

UK strength ladder
from heaviest to lightest use

How UK vape strength options stack up across the four common levels. Match to smoking history first plus adjust over time.

Higher strengths

20mg/ml plus 10mg/ml nic salt

  • 20mg/ml. Heavy ex-smokers 20+ a day.
  • 10mg/ml. Moderate ex-smokers 10 to 20 a day.
  • Nic salt format. Smooth at high strength.
  • MTL pod kit. Low-power device pairing.
  • Fast craving relief. Cigarette-like delivery.
  • Start here then step down. If comfortable.
Lower strengths

6mg/ml plus 3mg/ml

  • 6mg/ml. Light ex-smokers 5 to 10 a day.
  • 3mg/ml shortfill. Sub-ohm experienced users.
  • Freebase format usually. Sub-ohm pairing.
  • Sub-ohm device. Higher-power DTL kit.
  • Slower craving relief. Reduced addictiveness.
  • Long-term target for many. After stepping down.

Frequently asked

UK 20mg/ml strength questions

Is 20mg of nicotine a lot?
Depends on the user. 20mg/ml is the UK legal maximum strength. It suits ex-smokers who had 20 or more cigarettes a day. For them, 20mg/ml nic salt matches the nicotine hit they were used to. For lighter smokers or non-smokers, 20mg/ml is too much and can cause nausea, lightheadedness or over-consumption. Strength should match smoking history, not be chosen for its maximum value.
How does 20mg/ml nicotine compare to cigarettes?
A single cigarette delivers around 1mg of nicotine to the bloodstream. A 2ml pod of 20mg/ml e-liquid contains 40mg of nicotine but not all of it is absorbed. Roughly 20 to 40 draws on a 20mg/ml pod deliver a similar total nicotine load to one cigarette. The exact figure varies by device, draw technique plus user physiology. The cigarette equivalence is approximate not exact.
Who should use 20mg/ml nicotine?
Heavy ex-smokers. Adult UK smokers who had 20 or more cigarettes a day will usually need 20mg/ml nic salt to satisfy cravings when they first switch to vaping. Moderate smokers of 10 to 20 a day usually do better on 10mg/ml. Light smokers suit 6mg/ml. Non-smokers should not vape nicotine at any strength. Pregnant women should not vape nicotine-containing products.
Can you overdose on 20mg/ml e-liquid?
Not through normal vaping. Adult vape users self-titrate: they stop drawing when they feel satisfied. The UK 2ml tank cap plus 10ml bottle cap limit how much nicotine can be consumed in one go. Accidental ingestion of e-liquid by children or pets is a different risk. A 10ml bottle at 20mg/ml contains 200mg of nicotine which is in the dangerous range for a small child. Always keep e-liquid in the child-resistant cap and out of reach.
When should I step down from 20mg/ml?
Once you have been comfortably off cigarettes for 3 to 6 months. At that point, many UK ex-smokers step down to 10mg/ml nic salt without losing control of cravings. Another 6 to 12 months may bring a drop to 6mg/ml. Some adult vapers continue at 20mg/ml long-term and that is a legitimate choice. The strength ladder is a personal journey, not a fixed timetable.
