Why Does My
Rechargeable Vape
Taste Burnt?

Rechargeable UK kits (refillable pod, prefilled pod, sub ohm) show burnt taste for four common reasons. Coil end of life. Low e-liquid. Chain vaping. Wattage too high. The fix is usually a new coil or pod. 1 to 3 weeks of clean vaping is normal between replacements.

The short answer

Four common causes. Coil has reached end of life. 1 to 3 weeks of normal UK adult use is typical. Flavour drops, vapour thins plus burnt taste appears around the same time. E-liquid level dropped too low. Below 25% in the tank or pod starves the wick. Chain vaping faster than the cotton can rewick between puffs. Wattage set above coil range on variable-wattage kits. The fix for all four: replace the coil (refillable pod kits and refillable tank kits) or replace the whole pod (prefilled pod kits). UK coil replacements are typically £1 to £3. Prefilled pods are £2 to £5. Prime every fresh coil for 3 to 5 minutes before first draw.

The detailed answer

Four causes of burnt taste on UK rechargeable vape kits

Rechargeable kits (any reusable UK vape device: refillable pod kit, prefilled pod kit or sub ohm kit) develop burnt taste for different reasons than a brand new coil. The coil is established. The question is what is wearing it out plus how fast.

Cause 1: coil at end of life

The most common cause after the first week:

  • Normal UK coil life. 1 to 3 weeks under moderate use at 10mg/ml or 20mg/ml nic salt.
  • The signs. Flavour fades first. Vapour thins next. Burnt taste is the final warning.
  • Cotton colour check. If visible through wicking holes, dark brown or black cotton means the coil is done.
  • Replace the coil. For refillable tanks. £1 to £3 per coil.
  • Replace the whole pod. For prefilled pod kits where the coil is built into the pod. £2 to £5 per pod.
  • Prime the fresh coil. 3 to 5 minute upright sit before first draw.

Cause 2: e-liquid level too low

A well-used coil that still has some life left can still burn if the tank is low:

  • What happens. Liquid drops below the wicking holes. Cotton loses its liquid supply.
  • The fix. Refill to the max line. Wait 5 minutes for the cotton to resaturate.
  • Keep above 25%. As a rule of thumb, refill when a third of the tank remains.
  • For pod kits. Check the pod window. Refill before the fluid drops below the wicking slot.
  • Do not vape an empty tank. Empty-tank hits produce immediate cotton damage.

Cause 3: chain vaping

Rapid successive puffs outrun the wick’s rewicking speed:

  • What happens. Cotton dries between firings. Each puff scorches more cotton.
  • Space your puffs. 10 to 15 seconds between draws is the rule.
  • Longer pulls need longer gaps. A 3-second draw needs more recovery than a 1-second draw.
  • High-power sub ohm needs more rest. 40W+ devices dry the wick faster than 15W pod kits.
  • The fix. Slow down. Do not chain puffs.

Cause 4: wattage too high

For variable-wattage kits only:

  • What happens. Power exceeds the coil’s rated range. Cotton overheats faster than it can rewick.
  • Check the coil range. Every UK MHRA notified coil shows a recommended wattage. e.g., 15 to 25 watts.
  • Stay within range. Going above shortens coil life dramatically. Going below wastes flavour but does not damage the coil.
  • Fixed-wattage pod kits. No user adjustment. Chipset manages wattage automatically.
  • Sub ohm kits. Check the coil wattage plus set the device accordingly.
UK authority source check. Coil life estimates reflect guidance from Vaporesso, Oxva, Uwell, Innokin plus Elf Bar across their UK TPD notified product lines. The 1 to 3 week range applies to typical MTL pod kit use at 10mg/ml to 20mg/ml nic salt strength. Sub ohm coils at 3mg/ml shortfills can last longer or shorter depending on wattage plus draw length. All UK vape coils covered here are MHRA notified for sale under the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016.
Four prevention habits

Four habits that extend
UK rechargeable coil life

Refill before 25%

Topping up early protects the wick. Vaping near-empty kills coils fast.

10-15 second gaps

Between puffs. Gives the cotton time to rewick. Most important habit for coil life.

Stay in wattage range

Check the coil rating. Run at the mid-point, not the ceiling. Going above wrecks coils within days.

Rotate flavours

Sweet dessert flavours crystallise on coils faster. Swap to menthol or tobacco for a day between.

Healthy vs worn coil

Healthy rechargeable coil vs
worn-out rechargeable coil

The signs that tell you the coil has life left vs the signs that tell you it is time for a replacement.

Healthy coil

Full flavour life

  • Clean flavour. True to the e-liquid profile.
  • Full vapour production. Consistent cloud.
  • White or off-white cotton through wicking holes.
  • No burnt notes on gentle draws.
  • Within 1 to 3 weeks of install. Normal service life.
  • Cost-per-week around £1 to £2. Acceptable.
Worn coil

Time to replace

  • Muted flavour. E-liquid tastes flat or different.
  • Thin vapour. Clouds smaller than usual.
  • Brown or black cotton. Carbonised wick.
  • Burnt notes on most draws. Regardless of gentleness.
  • 2+ weeks of heavy use. End of life reached.
  • Cost-per-week rising. Ineffective coil wastes liquid.

Frequently asked

UK rechargeable burnt taste questions

Why does my rechargeable vape taste burnt?
Four common causes. Coil has reached end of life (1 to 3 weeks of normal use). E-liquid level dropped below the wicking holes. Chain vaping faster than the wick can rewick. Wattage set above the coil’s rated range. For pod kits the whole pod usually needs replacement because the coil sits inside and is not user-serviceable. Replace the coil or pod and prime the fresh one properly for 3 to 5 minutes before first draw.
How often should I replace a rechargeable vape coil?
Every 1 to 3 weeks of normal UK adult use. Light users may get 3 weeks plus. Heavy users may need a coil every 7 to 10 days. The signs are clear: flavour drops off, vapour thins or a burnt taste appears. All three usually show up around the same time. Coils for refillable pod kits typically cost £1 to £3. Full pod replacements for prefilled kits cost £2 to £5.
What does it mean when my vape tastes burnt only sometimes?
Usually chain vaping or low e-liquid. Some puffs taste burnt when the wick has not had time to rewick fully. Other puffs taste fine when given 10 to 15 seconds gap. Check the e-liquid level (keep above 25%). Space your draws. If burnt puffs still appear, the coil is likely near end of life and a replacement is due.
Should I replace the coil or the whole pod?
Depends on the kit. Refillable tank kits with user-replaceable coils: just replace the coil (£1 to £3). Prefilled pod kits where the coil is built into the pod: replace the full pod (£2 to £5). Convertible kits accept both. Check the kit manual or ask at the retailer. Buying replacements from the same UK licensed retailer as the kit ensures compatibility.
Does coil life depend on e-liquid choice?
Yes. Higher-VG e-liquids plus sweeter flavours can shorten coil life. Sweeteners crystallise on the coil over time. Menthol plus tobacco flavours are typically gentler. Dessert, candy plus cream flavours are typically harsher. Nic salts at 20mg/ml produce more sweetener residue than shortfills. Rotating between 2 to 3 flavours rather than sticking with one sweet flavour extends coil life.
