What is E-Liquid?
E-liquid, e-juice, or vape juice is the flavoured mixture used inside vapes, with various options for flavours and nicotine strengths available. This vape juice goes inside your vape tank or pod, and when you activate your vape—either by pressing a button or inhaling on the mouthpiece—the liquid is pulled into the heating element inside the vape: your vape coil. The heat from the coil vaporises the liquid, converting it into a vapour for you to inhale.
There are various types of e-liquid available, all designed to be paired with different types of vape kits and vape hardware. However, no matter the type, brand, nicotine strength, or flavour, you’ll find a maximum of 4 ingredients in every e-liquid. These ingredients have all been deemed safe to be vaped.
Vegetable glycerine (VG)
A thick substance that creates bigger clouds and a smooth throat hit.
Propylene glycol (PG)
A thinner substance that acts as a flavour carrier and creates a strong throat hit.
Food-grade flavourings
Either natural or artificial and deemed safe for use in vaping products.
Nicotine
(Optional)
Helps satisfy your cravings with either a freebase or nicotine salt formulation.
What are the different types of E-Liquids?
There’s a wide array of different e-liquid types available for every type of vaper. To determine which type of e-liquid to buy, check the product description or user manual for your specific vape kit. Generally speaking, all vape kits are only compatible with specific types of e-liquid.
The types of e-liquid are:
- Nic Salts: Nicotine salts are 10ml e-liquids formulated with a special type of nicotine designed to reach the blood stream faster and deliver a smooth and satisfying throat hit. They’re vaporised at lower temperatures, making them ideal for MTL vapes like pod kits and starter vape kits.
- Freebase E-Liquids: Best suited to low-powered MTL devices like pod vapes and starter kits, freebase 10ml e-liquids are made with freebase nicotine, which is the classic type of nicotine used in vaping.
- Shortfills: Shortfill e-liquids are large bottles of nicotine-free vape juice designed for use in sub-ohm vape kits and DTL vape tanks due to their higher ratio of VG. The bottles come “short filled” with space for you to add 1 or 2 nicotine shots.
- Longfills: Longfills, also known as e-liquid flavour concentrate, are large bottles of vape juice which come half-filled so you can add your own nicotine and base mixture. Longfill e-liquids are the #1 choice for DIY vapers who like to customise their juice.
- Nicotine Shots: Nic shots come in 10ml bottles and are designed to be added to shortfills or longfills. They’re usually unflavoured and aren’t designed to be vaped on their own. Nic shots are available with different VG/PG ratios and various flavour additives like ice or menthol.
What PG/VG ratio do I need?
The ratio of PG and VG in your e-liquid should be based on the type of device you’re using.
Generally speaking, low-powered MTL (Mouth-to-Lung) vape kits—like most pod kits and starter vape kits—require a ratio of 50VG/50PG or 40VG/60PG. All 10ml e-liquids fall into this category, including nicotine salts and freebase 10ml eliquids.
On the other hand, high-powered DTL (Direct-to-Lung) vape kits, also known as sub-ohm vape kits, require a higher ratio of VG to PG. For sub-ohm vaping, you should opt for a 70% VG ratio or higher. The higher the VG content, the bigger the clouds.
What Nicotine Strength should I buy?
The nicotine strength you should get will depend on two factors: your previous smoking habits and the type of device you’re using. Nicotine strength is measured in milligrams per millilitre, or mg/ml, though most e-liquids simply state this in milligrams (mg). You may also see nicotine strength listed as a percentage, such as 2%—which equates to 20mg/ml.
If you’re using an MTL device, like a pod vape or a starter vape kit, you should base your nicotine strength on your previous smoking habits. Remember: it’s important to ensure you’re getting enough nicotine to satisfy your cravings when you make the switch!
- 1 – 5 cigarettes per day: Choose an e-liquid strength of 3mg – 6mg.
- 5 – 10 cigarettes per day: Choose an e-liquid strength of 6mg – 12mg.
- 10 – 20+ cigarettes per day: Choose an e-liquid strength of 10mg – 20mg.
If you’re using a DTL or sub-ohm vape kit, you’ll be producing a lot more vapour (and using a lot more e-liquid) per puff thanks to the greater power output from your device, so you should opt for a lower nicotine strength. Most DTL vapers, including ex-smokers who smoked a pack a day, prefer a 3mg nicotine strength in their shortfills, though the maximum strength we’d recommend is 6mg. Anything higher can cause a harsh throat hit and may lead to overconsumption of nicotine.
