Switch from Cigarettes to Vapes During the Cost-of-Living Crisis

If there’s one thing that anyone can agree on in the UK, it’s that the cost of living is higher than it ever has been. So many of us are finding that our disposable income has reduced significantly due to the sheer amount that we’re having to spend on bills and other essentials. As a smoker, another cost that must be factored in is the price of cigarettes, which is by no means affordable.

It’s unrealistic to expect a full-time smoker to go from smoking 10 cigarettes a day to not having any nicotine at all; after all, their body has become reliant on the chemical. Despite this, there are ways of satisfying one’s nicotine cravings without shelling out obscene amounts of money for cigarettes. One of these methods is by making the switch to vaping.

Not only is vaping the significantly cheaper option, but e-cigarettes don’t contain the poisons and cancerous chemicals that are found in traditional cigarettes. Therefore, not only is making the switch to vaping better for your bank account in these trying times, but it’s also more beneficial to your health.

Discover more about how making the switch from cigarettes to vapes could help you during the cost-of-living crisis here.

How Much Does Smoking Cost?

In the last 10 years, the cost of a pack of cigarettes has doubled, costing smokers anywhere from £9.73 to £13.60. Similarly, the average price of rolling tobacco is now £9.02 for a 30-gram pouch. From this, it can be deduced that cigarette and tobacco prices have risen faster than inflation, with tobacco products increasing by 50%, while disposable incomes have only risen by 5%. Consequently, smoking has become 30% less affordable since 2008.

On an annual basis, £15.6 billion is spent on tobacco products. As far as the individual smoker is concerned, this can equate to thousands of pounds each year. On average, smokers in the UK smoke 10 cigarettes daily, meaning that the average smoker uses a pack of cigarettes every two days. Say an individual spends £11.67 on a pack of cigarettes, this means that they could be spending as much as £46.68 on cigarettes each week. This equates to as much as £2,427.36 per year. Now, this figure only applies to the average smoker that gets through 10, averagely priced cigarettes per day. If you’re someone who smokes 20 expensive cigarettes per day, the cost will be more than twice as much.

How Much Does Vaping Cost?

From taxes alone, vaping is already the cheaper option. Vaping products are taxed by the government as standard consumer products at 20%. Meanwhile, cigarettes are taxed at the standard 20%, in addition to 16.5% of the retail price, and an extra £5.26 on a pack of 20 cigarettes.

Despite this, it can be difficult to estimate the cost of vaping due to the wide array of hardware options. In order to determine the cost of vaping, we have used the price of products on the Dispergo Vaping store.

Disposable Vapes

Disposables range from £3.99 to £6 and tend to last around two days. If a disposable costs £5, you could be spending up to £20 per week or £1,040 per year. Therefore, even with the most expensive mode of vaping, the average smoker could save as much as £1,387.36 per year.

Vape Kits

Starter Kits start from £19.99 and come with a free bottle of liquid. Vape kits range from £35.99 to £69.99 and contain the battery, tank/pod, coils, drip tip, and other components. At Dispergo Vaping, we only stock quality solutions that will last you years on end with proper maintenance. All you’ll need to buy is replacement coils and e-liquids

E-Liquids

E-liquid usage varies depending on the vaper and the device they’re using. For instance, a low-powered vape may use as little as 1-2 ml per day, while a pod system may use 4-5 ml per day, and a sub-ohm even more than that.

If we use our 50 ml shortfills as a foundation, these cost anywhere between £9.99 and £13.99, and each comes with one free nicotine shot.

If we assume the typical vaper gets through 5 ml of e-liquid per day, this means that they’ll need to buy a new shortfill every 10 days. This equates to a new bottle 36.5 times a year; if these bottles cost £11.99, this means that £437.64 is being spent on e-liquid every year. Additionally, if you opt for a larger bottle, such as a 100 ml shortfill, you’ll manage to spend even less.

Coils

On average, vapers need to replace their coils every one to two weeks; however, this depends on how frequently one vapes. Our packs of coils cost anywhere from £6 to £15. If your coils were to come in packs of four, cost £10.50, and you replace your coil on a weekly basis, this would set you back £126 per year.

Mods and Sub-Ohm Vapes

Mods cost anywhere between £29.99 and £47.99. As with our vape kits, these are designed to last for years on end.

Is Vaping Cheaper than Smoking?

From the above costs, we can deduce that the average vaper will spend £616.63 per year on their vaping equipment. As a result, we can safely say that vaping is cheaper than smoking and making the switch could really do you a favour amid the cost-of-living crisis.
