Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt?

Vape_Taste_Burnt

There is nothing more shocking than inhaling on your vape and, instead of the smooth, pleasant hit of whichever e-liquid you have chosen, instead, you get a harsh, dry kick in the throat. This cough inducing kickback leaves a nasty taste and can put you off vaping again.

However, understanding the reason behind why your vape tastes burnt will help you avoid coming across this problem again.

Consequences of a Burnt Vape Coil

In short, the reason why you are getting a burnt hit when inhaling on your vape is that you have allowed the liquid to dry out. Because you have not replaced the liquid, then the coil wick starts to dry. The drier it becomes, the more the atomiser starts to burn the wick. Once it gets to this stage, you know that a burnt hit is imminent – in short, you are simply inhaling a burning piece of cotton wick, so it is no wonder that it is so off-putting!

What should I be looking for?

Like anything, prevention is better than a cure, and if you can stave off a burnt hit before it occurs, then you’ll be saving both your throat and your vape. As well as keeping an eye on your liquid levels, watch out for what is often referred to as a ‘dry hit’ – a taste that you will recognise as being weaker and simply ‘odd’ compared to what you should be inhaling.

Although not particularly unpleasant, it doesn’t have the intensity of a burnt hit, and you should use it as your primary indicator that there is something wrong with your vape, and you should investigate the wick and its liquid levels.

Another reason why you might have experienced a burnt hit is if it is your habit to take a number of quick puffs in a row – what happens here is that the wick does not have enough time to re-soak up the e-liquid, meaning that it quickly dries out. Without realising it, you have puffed your way past a dry hit and are hit with a burnt hit. Similarly, if your wattage is too high, it will evaporate more quickly than it should.

How to Fix a Burnt Coil in a Disposable Vape

A burnt hit is unfortunately the end of a disposable vape. Because the cotton is already soaked inside a disposable it is not possible to remedy the problem by simply refilling it with more e-liquid. Although a burnt hit is rare with a disposable, it is probably more to do with a manufacturing issue, so make sure that the brand you choose is of good quality. If a burnt hit occurs, you might simply have to admit defeat and dispose of it in the usual way and start again with a new disposable.

In the spirit of prevention, responsible vaping habits will help you to avoid experiencing burnt hits in the future and save you unnecessary additional expenses in replacing burnt-out coils.

Make sure your vape tank and battery are compatible

If you are a novice vaper, you would be better advised to invest in a ready-built vaping kit which is delivered to you with compatibility guaranteed.

Keep power gradual and consistent

When you power up your vape, do so in a controlled and gradual way, as a sudden surge could burn out the coil. Take particular care if you are vaping in a cold environment or if you have not used your vape for some time.

Make sure you’re using the correct juice for your vape

If you are a fan of high VG (vegetable glycerine) juices, for example, some coils are not suitable for the thicker high sugar content of VG juices.

Keep topped up

A failsafe way of avoiding a burnt vape coil is to keep topping up the levels of juice and avoid letting it get too low.

Give the coil time to soak up the liquid

While you may be impatient to take a deep puff on your vape, give it a few minutes after refilling for the cotton wick to soak up the liquid. You can take a couple of puffs without switching it on to encourage a draw-up of the juice, but if you start heating and puffing too quickly, then you risk drying out the wick before you’ve even started.

Watch your vaping technique

Taking quick puffs in rapid succession puts too much pressure on the coil. Instead, learn to relax with your vape. Take longer, more meditative puffs that will calm you down and help to maintain the integrity of your vape as a whole.
